The Red Gate or Bound by Chastity Rule (열녀문 / 烈女門 - Yeolnyeomun) is a 1962 film directed by Shin Sang-ok.[1]

Synopsis[]

A nobleman's widow has an affair with a servant, despite social restrictions that a widow must remain celibate. When she bears the servant's son, the servant and the baby are driven out of her in-law's house. The baby grows to manhood and attempts to meet his mother, but she must refuse out of obedience to her in-laws and custom.[1]

Critical Appraisal[]

Variety reviewed the film in its showing at the 1963 Berlin Film Festival. Writing that the film was something of a surprise from Korea, the review judged it better than many similar Japanese productions. Though Variety noted that the film was intended mainly for the Korean domestic audience, it was nonetheless an interesting, "surprise" entry at Berlin.[3]
