The Eunuch (내시 / 內侍 - Naeshi) is a 1968 film directed by Shin Sang-ok.[1]

Critical Appraisal[]

In 1972 The Eunuch was dubbed into Mandarin and released internationally with both Chinese and English subtitles. Reviewing the film in Hollywood on April 18 of that year, Variety remarked positively on the technical aspects-- sound and color photography-- and acting credits. The music was judged "effective", and the scenery of Korea "delightful". The screenplay was said to be uneven, with all the action occurring in the first half hour, and the rest of the film given up to flash-backs explaining the action. The review complained about the English subtitles, which were particularly badly translated and contained obvious spelling errors, such as "thorn" instead of "throne". Also disliked in the review, was that the film, presented as a historical presentation of customs throughout its duration, "cops out" at the end when a brief narration admits that no-one knows for sure what happened "behind the scenes", and that the film's story was pure fiction.[2]
